that hard disks use SMART for bad sector manipulation.
When a bad sector is encountered by SMART it replaces
the sector with a new one from the spare sector pool.
The problem is that the data that was stored in the
bad sector is still on the hard disk and can not be
accessed by the user. Specialist data recovery
companies can often regain access to this data. In
most cases it is not a problem, however if the bad
