The first cricket equipment bore little resemblance to
what's used today. The original bats looked much like
a modern hockey stick. Folklore maintains the first
paddle style evolved out of a shepherd's crook.
Today's cricket bat is made of willow wood sealed with
linseed oil. According to the 42 laws of cricket, the
bat cannot exceed 38 inches in length and a little
more than four inches wide, consisting of a handle and
paddle. The handle is padded and taped in a manner
similar to a tennis racket. The similarity ends there,
with the cricket bat being much more substantial than
a tennis racket.
