Code Page is an internal table that the operating system uses to relate the keys on a keyboard to the characters displayed on the screen (fonts). Different code pages provide support for the character sets and keyboard layouts used for different languages and various locales. For example, to support Russian characters DOS uses (Code Page) CP= 866, Windows uses CP = 1251, Macintosh uses CP = 10007 and UNIX uses CP = KOI-8. In addition to all these code tables the new international standard called UNICODE is now being used by some new operating systems. In order to safely pass 8-bit data (Cyrillic characters) via communication links and networks capable of handling only 7-bit encoded characters, an encoding/decoding method called UU-coding has been created. This method is based on generation of four 7-bit characters for every three 8-bit encoded characters.
